- Does commuting cost your company time and money?
- Do your employees arrive late to work each day due to traffic problems?
- Is the cost of auto allowances going up each month due to continuing high levels of gasoline prices?
Black Tie has been in the shuttle service business since 1994. From 1994-1998, Black Tie had a subsidiary company, Black Tie Airport Express, which ran large buses on regular routes seven days a week to shuttle airline passengers from various hotels in the East Bay to the three Bay Area airports. At its peak, BTAE had a fleet of 10 34-passenger vehicles and 15 drivers. In 2001, we began operating a shuttle system for a major South Bay Company, running buses daily between their office campus and the CalTrain stations at Mission and Bowers/Walsh, using a total of five vehicles and seven drivers. The contract also included provisions for transporting employees from neighboring corporations. In 2003, we began operating a daily shuttle system for a large East Bay Company transporting their employees from BART and Ace Train stations to their corporate headquarters in Pleasanton. Both of these contracts are in place today.
In addition, we have operated the Rocky Road Bus, a large school-bus style bus for Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream Foundation for the past six years. We offer the bus to non-profit groups on a fee-free basis, to provide transportation for school and special group field trips. In addition, we offer the bus as a live auction item to various groups, allowing them to raise substantial funds. The bus operates every day of the week, with a group of four drivers sharing the shifts. We do all scheduling as well as operation and maintenance for this contract.
All these experiences have taught us a great deal about operating and maintaining a fleet of shuttle buses, and have dictated some operational changes which benefit all present and future shuttle customers:
- We have built an efficient centralized dispatch center to deal not only with day-to-day scheduling of drivers and vehicles, but also to respond to customer requests on an on-demand basis.
- Most of our chauffeurs now have their B licenses, a requirement of the California DMV to operate buses, so we have a large pool of drivers available for shuttle assignments as needed.
- Our mechanics and detailers have extensive on-hands training in keeping our vehicles in optimum condition. We recently purchased a mobile wash truck, so that we can maintain the vehicles up to our standard whether they are based here or in the San Jose area.
- We have established good relationships with a number of vehicle vendors and lenders, giving us access to the best equipment in reasonable time frames when we need to supplement our fleet.
- Our training program for drivers has evolved into one that assures our drivers are professionals who know their routes, operate their vehicles in the safest manner possible, and treat our customers with high regard and courtesy at all times.
Our fleet includes 13-passenger vans and 21-, 27-, 31- and 35-passenger motor coaches ideal for this type of transportation. They feature comfortable seating, air conditioning and a/v capabilities, to provide stress-free transportation for your employees.
